Mkulu Kei
horse trails, a safari equine holiday along the Wild Coast, riding
horses on the beach and swimming through the rivers and estuaries.
The hot African sun baking down with the ocean breeze a cooling effect.
Sand, salt and rain making your equine adventure special for you but
incredibly hard on our saddles. With clients ranging from very young
through to grandparents we have to carry a large selection of different
size saddles. Our clientele is as diverse as the terrain we ride through,
and as a large number of our clients are new to riding and the number
of hours our horses are under saddle we require a saddle that is not
only comfortable for the riders but for the horses too. We found that
the average beginner rider was sitting on the back of the saddle and
not in the seat; as a result the saddle was pushing on the horses
back and the riders weight aggravating the situation. The nervous
clients while trying to hang on the front of the saddle and were sitting
unbalanced. Our enthusiastic little riders where kicking the saddle
flap and not the horse or pony. The Result we stated making our own
Mkulu Kei saddles, we for some time had been making saddle blankets,
webbing bridles and halters, for our own use. Mkulu Kei horse trail
tack shop was established from client interest.
At Mkulu Kei we go the extra mile to make your equestrian holiday
exceptional. We make the effort to not only make your riding
holiday personalised but to make sure that both our riders and
horses are happy and comfortable. The best of equestrian holiday

sewing machines from a previous sewing business we could make
jodhpurs, blankets etc. to order, In time we will increase our
equine range and availability.
T-shirts
We have a selection of good quality, bright coloured long and short
sleeves T-shirts with horse prints. The T-shirts are available in
both children and adult sizes from small through to XX large. Printed
with a large selection of fun horsey and more realistic horse pictures.
Halters and bridles
Adjustable webbing halters and bridles in a selection of colours
to fit most size ponies or horses. We are more than happy to make
a bridle or halter to fit a very small pony or big horse. At the
moment we are busy with weaning halters, a foal halter that will
assist you in weaning.
These equine products where born out of interest from clients. We
use our halters and bridles on trail and at the stable, as they
are practical and hardwearing. Clients made enquiries as to the
availability and where they to could purchased. As a result we keep
a small stock. Please just ask.
Saddle
An English style saddle designed more for new riders and stockman.
Although it looks like and English saddle it is slightly higher
in front so you balance on the saddle, not the horse’s mouth,
and higher at the back to help you sit in the saddle correctly so
your weight is in the correct place in the saddle making it more
comfortable for the horses back. We have shortened the flap on the
smaller saddles so that our younger riders are kicking the horse
and not the saddle.
Leather saddles require high maintenance to keep them in good condition.
As our saddles have to cross the rivers we wanted a low maintenance,
durable saddle and are currently experimenting with various synthetic
coverings. At the moment we are using our saddles on a trial basis
and they will only be available to the public once we are satisfied
with the durability of the fabrics used. In the future we also intend
to offer leather saddles based on the same tree, and will be developing
a Maclennan style stock saddle.
