People have been riding horses since about 2000 BC and first rode bareback. If you ride at a riding school you probably don’t give much thought about the saddle as long as it is comfortable for you. However if you own that horse you will start to think about how it fits your horse. You may have several horses all different shapes and sizes. Depending on the different equestrian disciplines you may require a specialist saddle.

Mkulu Kei horse trails, a safari equine holiday along the Wild Coast, riding horses on the beach and swimming through the rivers and estuaries. The hot African sun baking down with the ocean breeze a cooling effect. Sand, salt and rain making your equine adventure special for you but incredibly hard on our saddles. In trying to find the best saddle for our requirements we manufactured a perfect long distance saddle, a cross between English and a stock saddle. We have taken the best of both to design the ultimate trail saddle for our use and to sell to you.

Our equestrian shop was established from client interest. Proudly South African made, we manufacture horse tack and equine products and a saddle to fit your high withered horse, low withers or over fat pony with no withers. Equine products for sale at our equine shop direct from the factory for all your equestrian tack and horse equipment. Specializing in a light weight trail endurance saddle, stock saddle, youth saddle, and polo crosse saddle in leather or synthetic. An adaptation of English and Western saddles this has proved to be the best horse saddle used on trial.

Our equipment ad saddles are tested in abnormal riding conditions at Mkulu Kei Horse Trails & Riding Holidays over long distances, different horses shapes, an assortment of riders, over extended periods, expected to ride through salty estuaries, to be durable enough to handle constant use, being man handled and the abuse of our daily routine and low maintenance. It was not long before we had enquiries from our riding clients to manufacture to sell to them, general purpose saddles, bridles halters and then for a polo cross saddle.

Horse riding equipment can be expensive and equestrian suppliers are sometimes limited to what they have in stock, we can custom make for your tack & saddle requirements from the factory tackshop. Riding saddles come in all shapes and sizes but are not usually tested in the conditions our saddles must endure.

Would you submerge your saddle in salty water and then ride on for 2-6 hours only to repeat the same abuse the next day for months on end and expect your saddle to last?

We do! At Mkulu Kei Horse trails crossing salty water estuaries with the horse tacked up is a normal experience, it is the only way to cross some rivers to get our clients to the next night stop.


Our saddles have been truly tested and since using our own saddles we have not encountered any discomfort to our horses and witnessed horse’s mobility increase.

Our Own Mkulu Kei Saddles

Saddles available in child and two adult sizes and in both Leather and synthetic.

All saddles are available in the Annamart design, with a narrower waist/twist designed for women riders making the saddle narrower in front of the seat without effecting the fit on the horses back. More like a English saddle and designed to be more comfortable for the lady rider especially over long periods in the saddle, they are great for men and younger riders too.

A lightweight, general purpose, hard working, practical saddle for a wide range of equine and various disciplines providing maximum comfort for both horse and rider. A fiberglass tree that is light and guarantees symmetry and alignment and is virtually unbreakable, guaranteed under normal riding conditions. Each saddle has to pass stringent quality testing before leaving the factory. Looking for an alternative foal weaning method than forced separation?

Separation causes stress to both mare and foal and can be life threatening. Our weaning halter allows mother and foal to remain together without breaking their bond and gives the foal time to learn social leadership skills. Breaking the bond between mother and baby can cause the foal to be overly aggressive or too timid, our foal-weaning halter uses a natural horse technique to reduce fear and build bonds. The mother will determine how quickly the nursing will stop through discomfort to her and will give fair warning to the foal. The process generally takes four to six weeks, depending on levels of tolerance from the mother and persistence from the foal.

The no stress halter assists you when weaning a foal that is comfortable for the foal to wear but uncomfortable for the mare when the foal tries to drink. Allowing the mare and foal to remain together (the separation of mother and foal is more stressful on both than not getting the milk) resulting in happy horses and no stress to you.
