Please if you are not in a good place in
your life and need a totally different environment, need time
to heal. Come but be honest with us and don't choose the height
of our busy season. We would like to help you and have helped
others in the past. One December a lady on anti depressants decided
she was well enough to stop taking her prescription, against her
doctors and our advice and crashed in the height of our riding
season impacting on her life and our business!

could work in teams or as an individual on different projects
and could find yourself painting poles and jumps, grooming,
halter training foals through to backing youngsters, schooling
going horses with potential, jumping, helping with medical problems,
working with abused and neglected horses, pulling out foals, helping
with teaching in the pony camp, help around the stable and being a
second guide / instructor. You will get lots of time to ride different
horses and you will get to ride horses on the beach regularly.
No hours of cleaning tack or mucking out
stables. Without your extra pair of hands we would not have
successfully rehabilitated so many abused and neglected horses.
It is time consuming to get their trust and work through issues
and they require constant reassuring and handling.
This is not a free holiday, you pay a
small fee to enjoy our privileged life, learn from our horsemanship
techniques and gain equestrian experience.
Volunteering is an affordable, inexpensive
holiday option; on each ride you are riding a horse that we could

and without the paying volunteers we could not finance the development
project.
Riding Development Programme

responsibly on their own will benefit coming any time during the
year while those who can't ride would get the most out of coming
during the school holidays. When we are teaching holiday makers
how to ride all day and everyday, your riding skills will improve
dramatically in a very short time. A great way to learn how to ride,
get horseback riding lessons in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.
In the high season
(school holidays) the development project must be put on hold,
although we invite a few boys to join the ride depending on the
level of the ride.
Our weight limit
restriction for riding is 95 kg (210 lbs) and as
a equestrian volunteer you must be fit enough to ride, tack
up and fetch horses from the field.

Adventure Volunteers
Photos of Volunteers at Cher-a-Don
Here is an opportunity whether you can
ride a horse or not to help us help others at an adventure camp
facility.
Cher-a-Don (Lalapanzi) Adventure Centre is a
team building adventure centre venue where we facilitate youth,
schools, churches, corporate day outings. Sometimes it is just for
the day but more often it is overnight for 2-7 day camp.
You are aware of the crime in South
Africa, well here is your chance to help us reduce the statistics.
A very large % of the camps are youth in
trouble with the law or children at risk. We work with the children
teaching them new life skills through the activities. Many of these
children come from very poor and under privileged back grounds, from
communities in the Eastern Cape. Some participants just need someone
to care, talk to while others need to learn alternative life skills
that will change their life's.
Much of our petty crime is due to the environment
that the children are raised in, there are communities that live below
the living standards. Many are living in a crab in a bucket situation,
they believe it is their destiny to be poor, without hope. Working with
the kids you get the chance to help motivate the
kids to go back to school. Explain why with education they can improve
their lives, improve communities.
Either way you can make a diffrence. Spend time
talking, motivating and playing with the youth, help with the days
activities.
This is a safe environment where you can help
others less fortunate than your self.
Gap year adventure students can volunteer to help
with school and children groups at the adventure centre with activities,
obstacle course, abseiling, paintball and be involved with hiking and
other eco adventure experiences.
On your gap volunteer African experience meet
South African youth from a extreme diversity of backgrounds, the cream
of the cream teenagers with the school leadership camps to "at risk"
youth and "bad kids", troubled teenagers. Learn about the real
South Africa from the youth and community themselves.
Here is an placement in South Africa for you as
a volunteer to work with communities where you can make a change in
someone's life, make a difference to South Africa. Where your skills,
compassion and interest in the youth will pay off. This is an ideal gap
opportunity for a trainee social worker, teacher or psychiatrist, those
interested in Hippo therapy, equine assisted therapy or just a
compassionate person wanting to help someone else.
Come visit, volunteer between studies, come and
get work experience. Come on a career or study break, spend time with
us on a gap program where you can change lives, work with communities
that are less privileged.
If we don't have a camp on that day you will be
expected to tidy and clean the venue, paint or repair the obstacle course
or help add new activities. Adventure volunteers we never know what type of
camp is going to book and don't get much advanced warning, some are the
troubled kids and others are not. We can not guarantee what type of
camps will be on during your stay with us.
As a adventure volunteer there are no restrictions
to weight like the equestrian volunteers however the Cher-a-Don (Lalapanzi)
adventure camps are physical and you will be required to keep up.
Adventure working students we expect you to help
where possible and interact with the camp participants in a positive
no judgmental manner.
This is not a free holiday, you pay a small
fee to enjoy our privileged life.

Help at a working equine farm and teambuilding
adventure centre. Experience everyday living in our incredible country,
meet South Africans either living in this area or on holiday, extend your
network of friends in South Africa. Learn the culture both black and white,
(It is politically correct to say black, white or coloured when referring
to race in South Africa). The saying "Just now" in South Africa
means when it happens, not immediately. Africa has its own unique time frame.
Experience first hand why our "Rainbow Nation" is so special and
sometimes complicated.
Then look at visiting other areas of South Africa,
have a safe home base. We can help you with ideas as to where else to go and
what to see and can advise what not to do for security reasons. Talk to our
riding clients and get contacts and ideas. |
 |
|
Working students from abroad or
outside South Africa are required to hold a valid passport which expiry
date at least 6 months later than your intended date of return to your
own country.
Visit this link for more
information and advise on travel working visas. Visa information
Volunteers from the UK, EU, USA,
Canada, Australia and New Zealand are not required to pay for a visa to
enter South Africa. You will be granted a temporary visitor's permit
valid for 90 days when you present your passport on arrival at the
airport in South Africa. However if you are intending to stay for
longer than 90 days, it is worthwhile applying for a visa in your home
country before you travel. This will save you the trouble of having to
extend your visitor's permit once you are in South Africa.
|
 |
To extend in South Africa there
is a small fee and you will need to go to the Home Affairs office in
East London one month before your visa expires.
Exempt: Australia, Belgium,
United Kingdom, Canada, Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, USA, France, Switzerland.
Accommodation
(Sharing). Is in our home
overlooking a beautiful area, with rolling hills and dams or in another house
on the same property, depending on numbers of volunteers at the time.
With horses grazing outside your
window, watch the inter-play and pecking order of a herd of horses from
the veranda. Check out the awesome African sunsets. Experience a braai
and South African food.
All meals are taken with our
family, an all-inclusive package on your working / gap vacation and we
open our home and hearts to our volunteers.

This is a
family run business and it is important to note:
It is a privilege that you are
invited as a guest into our lives and home. We have teenage daughters
and their friends and ask you to respect our home.
Due to the nature of tourism and
working with animals this is no 8-5 job! You could find yourself up early
and working until late, however it balances out, some days we just relax.
Go to the beach, town or local watering hole.
Why Should I Pay to Work?
This is an adventure travel volunteer
holiday, not employment. Without the paying equine volunteers we could not
finance the development project or be in the position to take in unwanted and
injured horses. Those students with us to help with the camps a % is used for
sponsoring a child at camp.
We only want those who really want
to be here to help, learn and work. Many years ago we had a student who
refused to get out of bed but he was happy to eat the meals. We had one
volunteer (mommy booked her in) that did not like animals! Why come? When
the dogs or cats came near her she pushed them away with her foot, and hit
a horse in the face because she thought it was going to bite her. Not
acceptable. Please if you dont want to be here dont take
someone elses place.

This is not a free

our horsemanship techniques, gain equestrian experience and help teach
a under-privileged child new life skills.

the year while those who can't ride would get the most out of coming
during the school holidays. When we are teaching holiday makers how to
ride all day and everyday, your riding skills will improve dramatically
in a very short time. A great way to get horseback riding lessons in a

supervision through to a beginner rider who is willing to learn. We do
not expect you to know everything.
For the students who don't ride
your time with us will be full with the camps, kids and helping us
repair and build new exciting obstacles.
Come

hills, rich Savannah grasslands and thick-forested valleys with
multitudes of rivulets cascading down to rivers that eventually spill
