Please read our "Assessing Your Riding Ability"
Assessing your horse riding ability
Use the following criteria to judge your riding abilities. It is
important that you are honest with yourself, as this affects your
own safety and that of the other riders within the group.
Can't ride: Has never been on a horse or pony, or has
been on a horse a few times and has some kind of idea of
how to stay on
Novice: Ridden a few times recently, but still not rising
at the trot with ease
Intermediate: Rides regularly, can post, rise at the trot,
canter, gallop, and can handle a horse in most situations.
These riders are divided into prefer a 'calm' or a 'hot'
horse
Experienced: Has been riding for many years, has had formal
equine training and has his or her own horse, and can handle
any horse, in any situation. These riders are divided into
prefer a 'calm' or a 'hot' horse
A horse or pony will be allocated to you based on your description
of your riding ability! It is important not only for your own safety
and those riding in your group but for maximum enjoyment on your riding
adventure that you are honest.
The most nervous rider sets the pace for safety reasons and
as they become more confident we increase the pace. Having the
ability to stay on the horse by hanging onto his mouth and bouncing
on his kidneys is not an experienced rider.
To find the correct horse for your riding ability and to
give you the best riding holiday experience, we spend time
describing each horse's personality before allocating your
horse.
If you are nervous or have had a bad experience or fall please
tell us. We can and would like to help you get the maximum
pleasure out of your horseback ride.
On one occasion we helped a terrified lady to
ride. A couple booked a day ride, as I introduced the horses
she was quietly standing in the back of the group but when the
time came to mount she froze. Then the truth came out. On instruction
from her doctor, she had been told she needed to address her
fears. This was not just fear but a phobia. Had we known in
the beginning it would have been easier with a one on one approach
we would have sent the balance of the riders off on their ride
and slowly introduced her to horses. It took an hour of intensive
encouragement just to get her to sit on the horse. She started
off on lead rein just walking but by the end she learnt to trot
by herself. A very emotional and life changing experience for
her, she cried with joy at her achievements and the experience
was extremely rewarding for us. She spent a further +- two hours
walking and touching the horses in the field, she left us saying
once she got home from her travels she was going to continue
riding.
