On your work & travel, volunteer exchange adventure in Africa there is a affordable voluntary work at Cher-a-Don Teambuilding Adventure Centre previously know as Lalapanzi Adventure Centre helping with the equine assisted therapy, adventure activities or just a compassionate helper, talking and motivating the camp participants.

Too often in South Africa assistance is given in the form of donations or hand outs. Help by teaching life skills to people empowering them to be in a position to help themselves in the future, more inclined to go back to school and get an education. With education comes new opportunities. Help us make a "bad kid" into a productive member of society.

Your skills, compassion and interest in the youth will pay off. We have churches, corporate and schools visit us, from a few hours to 7 days. Help us assist and identify the leaders on leader identification school camps for the schools next prefects.

On your gap volunteer African experience meet South African youth from a extreme diversity of backgrounds, the cream of the cream with the school leadership camps to "at risk" youth and "bad Kids". Learn about the real South Africa from the children and community themselves.

Here is an placement for you as a volunteer to work in South Africa where you can make a change in someone's life, make a difference to South Africa. Where your skills, compassion and interest in the youth will pay off. This is an ideal opportunity for a trainee social worker, teacher or psychiatrist, those interested in Hippo therapy, equine assisted therapy or just a compassionate person wanting to help someone else. Come visit, volunteer between studies, come and get work experience. Come on a career or study break, spend time with us on a gap program where you can change lives.

A work & travel destination in South Africa where as a volunteer get to see the difference you are making.

Help someone gain their confidence on the abseil or activity, assist with the horses in our equine learning and therapy. Spend some quality time with others that need your encouragement around a fire, the African sun setting on the Impala and Blesbok grazing on the hill side. Your volunteer work in South Africa can change the perception of troubled youth and in turn make a difference to a community.

Voluntary work at Cher-a-Don Teambuilding Adventure Centre (Lalapanzi) in South Africa is a fun filled adventure where in return your time and effort will help someone who needs your help and encouragement.

A high percentage of our adventure camps cater for youth from rural areas and townships in the under-privileged sectors of the community. Local youth, vulnerable kids and young adults; some are here on a journey because they are vulnerable to making bad choices and are "at risk". These kids are the youth that the crime syndicates and gang members target, they are easy to influence, hungry, have no real family support and without hope. Some are orphans, others have alcoholic parents

A % have been involved in crime and are sent to us through the courts as an alternative sentence, a second chance. These are individuals that are under 18 years old and have made a wrong choice and rather than going to jail they are offered a chance to change their lives.

Working with these camps is hard work but very rewarding. The youth arrive angry, bitter, resentful, hard core, some still under the influence of drink and drugs. They leave us with new life skills, increased self-confidence, increased personal self-esteem, courage, new interpersonal skills, a better understanding and cooperation with others, new decision making skills, understanding of teamwork and others discover they have leadership skills. They are fired up and motivated, ready to form new friends and fix broken  relationships with family members and wanting to go back to school to better their lives. After camp with new life skills they are less likely to be sucked back into crime as they believe in themselves and have a better understanding  and plan for their future.

Each individual requires personal attention, some just need someone to care, encourage, believe in them while others need more motivation to change. They are on camp for 3-5 days and you can see the difference from one day to the next, sometimes it is an activity or series of obstacles that changes their lives, maybe they are good at it or find it differcult; either way the result is character building, live changing.

The activities acknowledge the different strengths and abilities of individuals thus ensuring that all members of a group are given the chance to 'shine'. It is through the activities we are able to reach youth in trouble or at risk.

Our activities include rock climbing, horse riding, obstacle course, kloofing, canoeing, raft building, orienteering, paintball, abseiling, hiking, bird-watching & environmental exploring. Activities offer a wealth of experience in facilitating many initiative exercises and much personal growth takes place in this context, as does the inevitable 'team building'.

Team building is the process of turning a group of individuals into a team, equipped with skills such as communication, trust, co-operation, planning and honesty.

The productivity of a well-developed individual or team can be astonishing.

At Cher-a-Don team-building and adventure centre the activities offered are geared towards the age group and ability of the group concerned. The physical challenges of life in the outdoors help to develop self-reliance, personal responsibility and teach life skills. Other programs to promote communication and team work or to introduce students, teenagers, troubled youths and corporate members to the outdoor life are offered.

The more extreme games are adaptable to suit each group's needs and abilities, and teach valuable life skills by helping to find each individuals strengths and weaknesses thereby gaining great results with adventure to create a prosperous and successful outcome. By putting together a series of activities that build up and encourage confidence and by working on the individuals strengths and weaknesses their lives can be changed. By gaining trust in themselves and others, by encouraging and listening and offering new life skills, direction and solutions their lives can be transformed into making better choices that will be taken home and used in the future.

For many years there has been studies on therapeutic riding and the relationship between humans and horses that have led therapists to realizing the potential for healing through the use of horses.

See Equine Assisted Therapy/Learning

Equine-assisted therapy/learning: Using horses is an effective program for troubled, defiant, and/or rebellious adolescents and teenagers. The bond teens develop with a horse can help them learn alternative, more appropriate, and more effective ways of dealing with life’s challenges. A form of fun therapy where participants learn about themselves, other people and interacting with the world. Its not about teaching riding or horse care skills and the children do not need any previous experience of horses.

We offer a very wide range of high quality adventure activities, all goal orientated, to suit all ages and abilities including fun days, weekend breaks, instruction, adventure getaways, team building and outdoor pursuits, outdoor activity courses, class and school excursions, school group outings, veldskool, adventure camps, mini conferences, corporate weekends, functions, leadership identification, leadership development, sport camps & clinics, equestrian teams and associations.

Come visit us at Cher-a-Don Adventure Centre previously trading as Lalapanzi Adventure Centre, in South Africa and help with the camps, an opportunity to work with underprivileged communities.

A very high % of our camps are with troubled youth from less privileged backgrounds. Kids in trouble or at risk of making bad decisions.

Experience everyday living in our incredible country, meet South Africans either living in this area or on holiday, extend your network of friends in South Africa. Learn the culture both black and white, (It is politically correct to say black, white or coloured when referring to race in South Africa). The saying "Just now" in South Africa means when it happens, not immediately. Africa has its own unique time frame. Experience first hand why our "Rainbow Nation" is so special and sometimes complicated.

Why should I pay to work?

This is an adventure travel volunteer holiday, not employment. Without the paying volunteers we would not be in a financial position to give an underprivileged child the opportunity to experience a camp at Cher-a-Don. Our intention is every year to take the grade 5 class from our local school and give them the experience of a weekend at Cher-a-Don Team-building and Adventure Centre without any cost to themselves. Help us uplift a community.

We only want volunteers who really want to be here, want to help, learn and work. Please don’t take someone else’s place, if you would rather be somewhere else. This is an opportunity for you to have fun in South Africa while giving back.

Working students from abroad or outside South Africa are required to hold a valid passport which expiry date at least 6 months later than your intended date of return to your own country.

To extend your stay when in South Africa there is a small fee and you will need to go to the Home Affairs office in East London one month before your visa expires.
