form of donations or hand outs. Help by teaching life skills to people empowering
them to be in a position to help themselves in the future, more inclined to go
back to school and get an education. With education comes new opportunities. Help
us make a "bad kid" into a productive member of society.
|
Your skills, compassion and interest in the
youth will pay off. We have churches, corporate and schools visit us,
from a few hours to 7 days. Help us assist and identify the leaders
on leader identification school camps for the schools next prefects.

work in South Africa where you can make a change in someone's life,
make a difference to South Africa. Where your skills, compassion
and interest in the youth will pay off. This is an ideal opportunity

in Hippo therapy, equine assisted therapy or just a compassionate person
wanting to help someone else. Come visit, volunteer between studies, come
and get work experience. Come on a career or study break, spend time with us
on a gap program where you can change lives.
A work & travel destination in South Africa where
as a volunteer get to see the difference you are making.
|
Help someone gain their confidence on the abseil or
activity, assist with the horses in our equine learning and therapy. Spend
some quality time with others that need your encouragement around a fire,
the African sun setting on the Impala and Blesbok grazing on the hill side.
Your volunteer work in South Africa can change the perception of troubled
youth and in turn make a difference to a community.
Voluntary work at Cher-a-Don
Teambuilding Adventure Centre (Lalapanzi) in South Africa is a fun filled adventure
where in return your time and effort will help someone who needs your
help and encouragement.
|
A high percentage of our adventure camps cater for
youth from rural areas and townships in the under-privileged sectors of
the community. Local youth, vulnerable kids and young adults; some are
here on a journey because they are vulnerable to making bad choices and
are "at risk". These kids are the youth that the crime
syndicates and gang members target, they are easy to influence, hungry,
have no real family support and without hope. Some are orphans, others
have alcoholic parents
A % have been involved in crime and are sent to
us through the courts as an alternative sentence, a second chance. These
are individuals that are under 18 years old and have made a wrong choice
and rather than going to jail they are offered a chance to change their
lives.
|
 |
Working with these camps is hard work but very
rewarding. The youth arrive angry, bitter, resentful, hard core, some
still under the influence of drink and drugs. They leave us with new
life skills, increased self-confidence, increased personal self-esteem,
courage, new interpersonal skills, a better understanding and cooperation
with others, new decision making skills, understanding of teamwork and
others discover they have leadership skills. They are fired up and
motivated, ready to form new friends and fix broken relationships
with family members and wanting to go back to school to better their lives.
After camp with new life skills they are less likely to be sucked back into
crime as they believe in themselves and have a better understanding
and plan for their future.
Each individual requires personal attention, some
just need someone to care, encourage, believe in them while others need
more motivation to change. They are on camp for 3-5 days and you can see
the difference from one day to the next, sometimes it is an activity or
series of obstacles that changes their lives, maybe they are good at it
or find it differcult; either way the result is character building, live
changing.

Our aim is to encourage emotional intelligence and
accountability through group dynamic tasks, activities, team building exercises
and self-assessment programs. At Cher-a-Don Teambuilding Adventure Centre
(Lalapanzi) we strive to build self-belief and confidence in the individuals that
visit us through individual and team challenges that are adventure based. By adapting
the activities we can personalize the camp to suit the requirements of the day and
promote team work and tasks are designed to give individuals a chance to take the lead
and coordinate their team members.
Become a leader take control of your life.
|
 |
By developing life skills using team work and tasks and physical
activities as a medium, individuals learn communication skills, morale, trust.
Communication, cohesiveness strengthens teamwork of a group building team spirit
and an atmosphere of cooperation. Team work and team building are critical for personal
growth and success in life, social, business success and career. A good leader will both
inspire confidence and give a strong example of what to aim for in life. A good leader is
one that listens and not just talks, is positive and makes quick decisions to build a positive
team environment.
Learn leadership and management skills while having fun, Cher-a-Don
(Lalapanzi) a great venue for promoting leaders, school leader identification.
|
The activities acknowledge the different strengths and abilities
of individuals thus ensuring that all members of a group are given the chance to 'shine'.
With team tasks any differences, whether social standing, age, race, work place or
culture can be counter productive but by working together can remove the barriers and open doors.
It is through the activities we are able to reach youth
in trouble or at risk.

retreat and outdoor adventure camp venue with customized teambuilding and opportunities
for personal growth. Our activities include rock climbing, horse riding, obstacle course, kloofing, canoeing, raft building, orienteering, paintball, abseiling, hiking, bird-watching

Activities offer a wealth of experience in facilitating many
initiative exercises and much personal growth takes place in this context, as does the
inevitable 'team building'. |
 |
Team building is the process of turning a
group of individuals into a team, equipped with skills such as communication,
trust, co-operation, planning and honesty.
The productivity of a well-developed individual or team can
be astonishing.
At Cher-a-Don team-building and adventure centre the activities
offered are geared towards the age group and ability of the group concerned. Our
facilities are a venue for outdoor school leadership camps, sports teams and business
tours and designed to maximize the opportunities of being in an outdoor learning setting,
working on both personal and team strategies. Educators with their learners and business leaders and their
colleagues are challenged with new and demanding activities which are facilitated to help
them to develop and improve their personal skills and promote active and healthy lifestyles.
The physical challenges of life in the outdoors help to develop self-reliance, personal
responsibility and teach life skills. Other programs to promote communication and team
work or to introduce students, teenagers, troubled youths and corporate members to the
outdoor life are offered.
|
The more extreme games are adaptable to suit each group's
needs and abilities, and teach valuable life skills by helping to find each
individuals strengths and weaknesses thereby gaining great results with adventure to
create a prosperous and successful outcome. By putting together a series of
activities that build up and encourage confidence and by working on the individuals
strengths and weaknesses their lives can be changed. By gaining trust in themselves
and others, by encouraging and listening and offering new life skills, direction
and solutions their lives can be transformed into making better choices that will
be taken home and used in the future. |

For many years there has been studies on therapeutic
riding and the relationship between humans and horses that have led therapists
to realizing the potential for healing through the use of horses.
See Equine Assisted Therapy/Learning
Equine-assisted therapy/learning: Using horses
is an effective program for troubled, defiant, and/or rebellious adolescents
and teenagers. The bond teens develop with a horse can help them learn
alternative, more appropriate, and more effective ways of dealing with life’s
challenges. A form of fun therapy where participants learn about themselves,
other people and interacting with the world. Its not about teaching
riding or horse care skills and the children do not need any previous
experience of horses.
|
We offer a very wide range of high quality adventure
activities, all goal orientated, to suit all ages
and abilities including fun days, weekend breaks, instruction, adventure getaways,

A very high % of our camps are with troubled youth
from less privileged backgrounds. Kids in trouble or at risk of making bad
decisions.
Experience everyday living in our incredible country, meet
South Africans either living in this area or on holiday, extend your network of
friends in South Africa. Learn the culture both black and white, (It is politically
correct to say black, white or coloured when referring to race in South Africa).

Africa has its own unique time frame. Experience first hand why our "Rainbow
Nation" is so special and sometimes complicated. |

Why should I pay to work?
This is an adventure travel volunteer holiday, not
employment. Without the paying volunteers we would not be in a financial
position to give an underprivileged child the opportunity to experience a
camp at Cher-a-Don. Our intention is every year to take the grade 5 class
from our local school and give them the experience of a weekend at Cher-a-Don
Team-building and Adventure Centre without any cost to themselves.
Help us uplift a community.
We only want volunteers who really want to be here,
want to help, learn and work. Please don’t take someone else’s place,
if you would rather be somewhere else. This is an opportunity for
you to have fun in South Africa while giving back.
Working students from abroad or outside South Africa
are required to hold a valid passport which expiry date at least 6 months
later than your intended date of return to your own country.
Visit this link for more information and advise on
travel working visas. Visa information.
|
 |
Volunteers from the UK, EU, USA, Canada, Australia
and New Zealand are not required to pay for a visa to enter South Africa.
You will be granted a temporary visitor's permit valid for 90 days when
you present your passport on arrival at the airport in South Africa.
However if you are intending to stay for longer than 90 days, it is
worthwhile applying for a visa in your home country before you travel.
This will save you the trouble of having to extend your visitor's permit
once you are in South Africa. To extend your stay when in South Africa
there is a small fee and you will need to go to the Home Affairs office
in East London one month before your visa expires. |
Exempt: Australia, Belgium, United Kingdom, Canada,
Denmark, Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, USA,
France, Switzerland.
Accommodation (Sharing).

Is in our home overlooking a beautiful area, with
rolling hills and dams or in another house on the same property, depending
on numbers of volunteers at the time. With horses grazing outside your window,
watch the inter-play and pecking order of a herd of horses from the veranda.
Check out the awesome African sunsets. Experience a braai and South African
food. Meet South African youth from a extreme diversity of backgrounds, the
cream of the cream with the leadership camps to "at risk" youth and
"bad Kid's. Learn about the real South Africa from the children and community
themselves.
All meals are taken with our family, an all-inclusive
package on your working / gap vacation and we open our home and hearts to our
volunteers.
|
 |
What work will I do?
No two days are ever the same, sometimes we
have camps one after the other while at other times (when the schools are writing
exams) we are quieter. We need you to be our other pair of hands, ears or voice.
When the kitchen staff are very busy help them, if we are busy with the obstacle
course, encourage, support, discipline, help the participants. Talk to the kids
get involved, each child needs attention. We require help repairing and making
new activities, taking out the participants on hikes, with orienteering, encouraging
at the abseil site and assisting with the horses during therapy.
|
 |
|
