Seagull's Hotel***

Seagulls Hotel *** Captain Arthur Hassall purchased “Marina House” a large single room for forty pounds in about 1925. He set up the business as “Seagulls” he added a kitchen and four rondawals made of wattle and daub. Annually adding further rondawels and a communal ablution block with “long drop” toilets.

As with most other resorts, Seagulls was taken over by the Transkeian Development Corporation, and operated by a succession of managers during which time major reconstruction took place. In 1985 shareholders of Galeka Trading Company purchased Seagulls, employing management until the political violence in the country made people afraid to visit the Transkei.

In 1994 Rod and Annatjie Dewberry negotiated to lease Seagulls during which time Rod and Annatjie gradually persuaded people that the Qolora area in Transkei was in fact a safe place to holiday and built the hotel as it is to day.

In 2005 the Tourism Grading Council and AA recommended grading the hotel to a Three Star Hotel.

In March 2008 Seagulls was sold and Juan Sahd took over the management of the hotel and under her very watchful eye the meals are of exceptional standard.

Seagulls Hotel a very comfortable tranquil family orientated hotel, situated right on the beach. Watch the dolphins from the deck and relax the sound of the waves will be heard from your spacious clean bedroom. But it is the friendly hospitality you will receive that will make your stay here a night to remember.

An exceptional five-course meal will be served in the hotel and for those of you that are vegetarian a meal will be prepared for you. When booking please make sure I am aware of your dietary requirements. Saturday night it is “seafood night”.

For those whose equine holiday falls on different night seafood platter can be arranged at a small extra fee.

Barry is the entertainment manager and many a good evening is spent listening to Barry on his guitar and singing along to all the old classics, Karaoke or dancing the night away.

Wavecrest Hotel***

Wavecrest Hotel *** is situated on rolling grass lawns on the Nxaxo estuary this is a nature and bird a lover’s paradise. Watch the Kingfishers or Fish Eagle dive for fish, the Cormorants drying their wings or the Crown cranes dancing on the beach. Take a walk to see what other birds you can cross off your list of “Must See”.

The island style bungalows and rondavels are clean, comfortable and functional. It is relaxed enough however, to make guests feel relaxed about coming home barefoot from the beach.

The family suites and double room accommodation each have an en suite bath or shower room with an abundance of steaming hot water.

The food is of high standard and my favourite is the selection of salads. Please make sure I am aware if you have special dietary needs so they can be catered for. Saturday night is seafood night.

Take a boat ride up the estuary into the mangroves, or for the more energetic canoe, squash and tennis. Take a dip in the pool over looking the estuary watching the estuary changing before your eyes.

And for those who want to spoil themselves try out the luxurious Spa.

Camping

Sleep in a tent in an indigenous forest on an estuary, listening to the sea. The evening is spent around the bonfire experiencing traditional South African food and chatting about your equestrian trek. A more rustic evening than the hotels, tonight a sleeping bag, “tilly lamps”, tent and ablutions without a roof. All adding character and adding a new element to your trail. This is an option that is well worth the adventure. Where else in the world could you listen to the sounds of the night and have an entire bay to yourself?

Ever thought you would like to canter your horse along a beach, or play in the waves?

You could be here on your coastal horse riding vacation.

The sound of the horse's hoofs on the sand or splash of the water will live with you forever.

Whether you dream of horse riding along open savannah grasslands, pristine coastal forests or unspoiled Wild Coast beaches, there's a Mkulu Kei Horse Trail that suits your available time, riding level and budget ...
